Rvlife Recap of Our First Season

Is Full-time RV life worth it?

Experiencing life on the road provided great adventure, a mechanical breakdown, boredom, and excitement.

Since we started as full-timers this past April, we visited eight states and drove close to or over five thousand miles. Nevada, Arizona, California, Oregon, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, and tipped into Montana.

It looks like an organized, planned trip. Not even close! There were a few zig-zags in between.

Utah did not disappoint as we ventured north from Panguitch. We spent the night at a Ute Tribal Campground next to the lake with a gorgeous sunset.

The Ute Tribal Veterans Memorial is a must-visit. Beautiful grounds, and the statue in the center is a stunning work of art.

A quick visit to the Dinosaur Monument

A stop at the boy hood home of Butch Cassidy.

My determination to live the lifestyle of my dreams was not going to be deterred by a few mechanical breakdowns: one, on the side of a Utah mountain road with no services for miles, and I mean nothing. After Wolf’s quick thinking and cleverness, a short temporary repair, we continued, only to find ourselves alone in a high wind situation on Highway 191 in Wyoming. This scary drive left us feeling that the motorhome could have and felt as if it would tip over at any moment. It felt like the longest road on the planet, and we would never see civilization again. Finally, arriving in Rock Springs, WY, I phoned my faithful KOA and secured a spot for the night. A rocking night in the motorhome, we woke up early, hit the road at 7:00 AM, and headed straight to Idaho. We have never hit the road that early. Our first day in Idaho was interesting. I found a boondocking spot in McCammon, ID, right off the I-15, Indian Rocks Dispersed camping. It is an old abandoned campground with about 15 spots. It was a washboard road going in, and there were a couple of people who appeared to live there. It was hot and not enough shade, so we moved on. Our second spot was a Harvest Host, The Idaho Potato Museum. We paid our $11.00 and took the tour, thanking them for letting us take up space in their parking lot. The museum is interesting and worth a visit. I did not know that potatoes grow a poisonous flower. Who knew?

Unfortunately, again, it was hot, and a small parking lot between the main road and a train track, our older girls were not doing well in the heat, and we moved on a third time. To the Idaho Fairgrounds, and finally, we were set for the evening. Great spot for $30.00 a night. Lush green grass, power, and water. We slept like rocks that night.

I’ve written much about Oregon, so I’ll not bore you with more. But…

California and a change of plans, we got a sweet spot for a night at the Pismo Beach Campground

After a few extended stays at campgrounds, we had a few days we were just bored. But it was those days I reflected on how blessed we are to live this life.

The difficult times of our RV life were minor compared to the adventures we had in our travels. After a month and a half of not traveling, we have concluded we have no desire to be stationary. We miss the travel and moving around.

We are hanging out deep in the southwest desert region for the winter, close to our home base, to visit family for the holidays. Making plans for our second season, we are excited for new adventures.

Thanks for stopping by for a read. I appreciate you!

  1. While I envy you beautiful scenery and the travel adventures… potato museum!… I’m too much of a homebody to enjoy living on the road. My husband and I are coming up on our 40th anniversary and if there’s one thing we’ve learned it’s that private space now and then makes a happy marriage. 😉
    Love your little sweatered friend.
