Oregon coastline this season was cold! We still had a great time. May wrap-up

We decided to visit the Oregon coastline again this season. There is something about the forestry lined Highway 101 and tiny coastal towns we love. The people, the experiences and the views are stunning. Alas, this season it was cold, around mid 50s most days. It rained ten out of the nineteen days. The moisture was cumbersome, the arthritis was kicking in for both of us, Sasha didn’t get as much beach time and the little ones were bundled up in sweaters, but we still enjoyed our visit. It’s the Oregon Coastline how can you not?
Campgrounds
In RV life you have certain campgrounds you put on a must stay list. Well, I finally scored a few days at Harris Beach Campground in Brookings, OR. We were so excited; we drove two long hard and windy days to arrive on May 3rd from our winter spot. And it rained three out of four days. It is on the checked off list and were able to walk the park and check out sites we want to book for next time.
When that visit was finished, we headed North on 101 for a visit to the Crazy Norwegian for fish ‘n’ chips. We spotted a campground between the mountains next to the river and they had spots open. After our lunch we thought we’d check it out. Humbug Mountain State Park is reservations only we found out and the cell service is none. Trying to book a space on site through my phone was not working. I blocked off my dates and when I went to the pay site I lost service. Thankfully the Park Ranger on duty was so helpful she was able to block the site as reserved for the days I wanted and told me to pay cash or check the old-fashioned way and put the payment in the drop box.
Our goal was to stay at Tillicum Beach campground. We had such a great time last season and we wanted to stay again. this year it was not so great weather and a bit of a challenge. Several rainy days kept us inside that required the use of our heater. Our propane heater isn’t working and not wanting to drop $600 for a new one we use our space heater, and it works just fine. Hook-ups are required so we had to forgo the beach view site. I did reserve four days for a beach site with no hook-ups and we lasted three. It was so cold and wet we couldn’t stand it. As you get older there are some comforts you do not compromise. I forfeited one night of funds. I didn’t care. I was cold. We moved into a first come first serve hook-up spot that I didn’t realize it was not level. It slopped down and we couldn’t get it level. You did pick up some speed walking to the back of the rig towards the bathroom. It was a little comical, but I was warm. So, there you go.

We spent 12 days at Tillicum in three different spots. We were covered for a spot over the Memorial Day weekend and that was my biggest concern for May.
Sasha didn’t get her daily beach runs as last season. The few she did get, she loved. This dog loves the beach.
We did discover a new fish ‘n’ chips place, expensive, but we now have a new favorite. South Beach Fish Market in Newport, OR. If you are in the area, check it out.
Back to the Vet for Sasha
After our beach stay it was time to travel inland for some warmth and of course Sasha needed a vet visit. Her ears had been bothering her for some time and we tried keeping them cleaned out, but she kept cocking her ear, shaking and scratching. She was established as a patient with her Oregon vet from last year and I always carry our dogs’ shot records so making a non-emergency vet appointment was easy.
The result was an ear infection in her left ear that apparently had been there for a while. Medicine in the ear and no water playtime for four weeks. For a dog that loves water, this does change our camp stays. Thankfully, we were done with our beach camping. However, we are in Oregon, and it rains.
Oregon will always have a special place in my heart
Regardless of the weather, we still enjoyed our time in Oregon. As a former resident of the state, I miss it. The biggest reason – I do not do well in extreme heat anymore and I will continue to summer in the northern part of the US.
For June we have a few things coming up and I can’t wait to share our June travels with you.
Have a great week,
Teresa for PetsLifeAdventure
